Piano vs. Keyboard for Beginners: What Actually Matters

July 31, 2026 Updated July 31, 2026 By MajorKey Piano Training School

Families often ask whether a beginner needs a “real” piano to start lessons. The honest answer: it depends on the instrument’s features far more than whether it’s technically acoustic or digital.

The feature that matters most: weighted keys

The single biggest factor is whether the instrument has weighted, touch-sensitive keys that respond like an acoustic piano — where pressing harder produces a louder sound, and the keys have realistic resistance. A digital piano with proper weighted action can be an excellent instrument to learn on. A basic keyboard with light, unweighted keys makes it harder to build correct hand strength and technique from the start.

Acoustic pianos

An acoustic piano offers the most authentic touch and sound, but requires more space, periodic tuning, and a larger upfront investment. It’s a great option if you have the space and budget, but it’s not a requirement for getting started.

Digital pianos

A quality digital piano with 88 weighted keys is a very practical choice for most beginning students. It requires no tuning, takes up less space than an upright, and — critically — still builds proper technique thanks to weighted action.

Basic keyboards: proceed carefully

A 61-key keyboard with unweighted keys can work for the very first few weeks of exploring the instrument, but it becomes a real limitation quickly. Full-size (88-key) range and weighted touch both matter once a student starts building real technique — see our guide to choosing a beginner keyboard for specifics to look for.

The bottom line

Prioritize 88 weighted keys over the acoustic-vs-digital question. That single feature will do more for a beginner’s technical development than almost any other decision about the instrument.
