Kids Piano Lessons

Lessons built around a child’s attention span, curiosity, and pace of progress.

Teaching kids piano well means recognizing that a seven-year-old and a twelve-year-old learn differently from each other — and very differently from an adult. Lessons are structured in shorter, focused segments, with plenty of positive reinforcement and repertoire chosen to keep young students engaged between lessons, not just during them.

Foundational skills — posture, note reading, and rhythm — are still the priority, but they’re introduced through activities and pieces that hold a child’s attention.

Who This Program Is For

  • Children roughly ages 5 through 12
  • Kids starting piano for the first time or continuing from an earlier program
  • Families who want consistent, structured practice habits established early

Learning Goals

  • Build reading, rhythm, and technique through age-appropriate pacing
  • Develop a practice habit that a child can sustain between lessons
  • Create a positive early relationship with the instrument

What Students Work On

  • Note reading and basic rhythm through engaging repertoire
  • Hand independence and coordination exercises suited to a child’s stage of development
  • Achievable practice goals set collaboratively with the student

The Lesson Experience

Lessons are paced to a child’s developmental stage rather than compressed into an adult-length format. Instructors build in variety — moving between technique, reading, and playing — to match a younger attention span, with regular check-ins with parents on progress and what to reinforce at home.

Benefits

  • Lessons paced to the child’s developmental stage, not a scaled-down adult curriculum
  • Clear, achievable practice goals between sessions
  • Regular parent check-ins on progress

FAQ

Questions About Kids Piano Lessons

What age should my child start piano lessons?

Many students begin around age five or six, once they can comfortably sit and focus for a structured lesson, though this varies by child. See our resource on choosing the right age to start for more detail.

How much should my child practice each week?

Practice expectations are set with your instructor based on your child’s age and current level, and typically grow gradually as skills and attention span develop.

What if my child has never played an instrument before?

That’s the normal starting point. Lessons begin with the fundamentals covered in Beginner Piano Lessons before moving into age-paced repertoire.
